In 1777, Philadelphia gunsmith Joseph Belton provided the Continental Congress a "new improved gun", which was able to firing nearly 20 pictures in 5 seconds; in contrast to more mature repeaters making use of complex lever-motion mechanisms, it applied an easier process of superposed loads, and was loaded with only one substantial paper cartridge.
